Tech Neck: Why Your Screen Time Is Wrecking Your Spine (and What to Do About It)
Between phones, laptops, and hours spent scrolling or working from a desk, most of us are looking down more than ever. That posture has a name: text neck. And if you've been dealing with neck stiffness, headaches, or tension between your shoulder blades lately, your screen habits might be the reason.
What Is Tech Neck?
Tech neck refers to the strain and postural changes that happen when we spend long stretches with our head tilted forward, whether that's looking down at a phone or hunched toward a laptop screen. In a neutral position, your head weighs around 10-12 pounds. Tilt it forward even 30 to 45 degrees and the effective load on your cervical spine can jump to 40 or even 60 pounds.
Do that for hours a day, every day, and it adds up. Over time it can lead to forward head posture, rounded shoulders, reduced neck mobility, and chronic tension that doesn't go away with a good night's sleep.
Signs You're Dealing With Tech Neck
- Neck or upper back pain, especially by the end of the workday
- Headaches that start at the base of the skull
- Tight, achy shoulders or that "knot" feeling between the shoulder blades
- Reduced range of motion when turning your head
- Fatigue or trouble concentrating by the afternoon
Getting Outside and Moving Is the Best Reset
The fix isn't complicated, it's just easy to skip when life gets busy. Movement and time away from screens are two of the most effective ways to counteract the damage.
A few ways to build this in:
- Take your breaks outside. Even a 10 minute walk around the block resets your posture and gets you out of that forward head position.
- Move your workouts outdoors when you can. A trail run, a hike, or an outdoor Hyrox-style session does double duty: it strengthens your body and gets you off the screen.
- Set a standing or stretch break every hour. Chin tucks, shoulder rolls, and doorway chest stretches take less than two minutes and go a long way.
- Create phone-free windows. Meals, your commute if you're not driving, and the hour before bed are easy places to start.
- Get outside daily, even briefly. Fresh air and a change in posture and environment matter more than people realize.
When to Get Checked Out
If you're dealing with regular neck pain, headaches, or stiffness that isn't improving on its own, it's worth getting your spine evaluated before it becomes a chronic issue. We see this constantly at Revival Chiropractic, and the earlier we catch postural strain, the easier it is to correct.
Give your neck a break from the screen, get outside, and get moving. Your spine will thank you.
