Whiplash After a Car Accident?
Get Treated Now. Don't Wait.

Many whiplash injuries feel minor at first, then worsen over days. Our Westminster clinic specializes in post-accident chiropractic care, documentation, and recovery. We bill your auto insurance directly so there's no cost to you out-of-pocket.

What Exactly Is Whiplash — And Why Is It Serious?

Whiplash is a soft-tissue injury of the neck caused by a sudden, forceful back-and-forth movement — like a whip cracking. The rapid acceleration-deceleration forces involved in a car accident (even low-speed collisions) can strain or tear the muscles, ligaments, and tendons of the cervical spine, and in more significant impacts, can affect the discs and facet joints as well.

What makes whiplash deceptive is that adrenaline from the accident can mask pain for hours or even days. By the time you feel it, the inflammatory cascade and muscle guarding patterns are already underway.

🧠 Structures Involved

Cervical muscles (especially the sternocleidomastoid and scalenes), ligaments, intervertebral discs, facet joints, and in severe cases — nerve roots. Brain and temporomandibular joints (TMJ) can also be affected.

🚗 How It Happens

Rear-end collisions are the most common cause, but whiplash can occur in any impact direction. Even collisions under 15 mph can cause significant soft-tissue injury — speed alone doesn't determine severity.

📈 The Inflammatory Timeline

Acute inflammation peaks at 48–72 hours post-injury. Without proper care, the body can lay down excessive scar tissue as it heals, leading to chronic stiffness, recurring pain, and restricted range of motion that persists for months.

Whiplash Symptoms to Watch For

Not all whiplash looks the same. Symptoms can emerge immediately or develop over several days. If you've been in an accident and experience any of the following, you should be evaluated promptly.

Common Symptoms

Neck Pain & Stiffness: The hallmark symptom — often worsening the day after an accident. Pain with rotation or flexion.

Headaches: Post-traumatic headaches originating at the base of the skull, often radiating forward. One of the most common secondary complaints.

Arm Pain or Tingling: Radiating pain, numbness, or tingling down into the shoulders, arms, or hands may indicate cervical nerve root involvement.

Dizziness & Brain Fog: Cervicogenic dizziness, difficulty concentrating, memory problems, or general mental cloudiness following head/neck trauma.

Visual Disturbances: Blurred vision or difficulty tracking can occur with concussive elements or upper cervical instability. Requires evaluation.

Sleep Disruption: Pain and sympathetic nervous system activation from trauma commonly disrupts sleep quality, creating a recovery feedback loop.

Upper Back & Shoulder Pain: The thoracic spine and shoulder girdle absorb significant force in whiplash-type mechanisms. Midback soreness is very common.

Jaw Pain (TMJ): Impact forces can displace the temporomandibular joint. Jaw pain, clicking, or limited mouth opening following an accident warrants evaluation.

How We Treat Whiplash at Revival Chiropractic

01

Comprehensive Accident Evaluation

Your first visit involves a full history of the accident mechanics and symptom timeline, orthopedic and neurological testing, cervical range-of-motion assessment, and soft tissue palpation. We document findings in detail for both your care and your insurance record.

02

Spinal Manipulation & Mobilization

Chiropractic adjustments restore normal joint mechanics disrupted by the impact. We use specific, controlled thrust techniques or low-force mobilization depending on your presentation and comfort level. Restoring cervical joint motion reduces pain, decreases nerve irritation, and interrupts the protective guarding patterns that can become chronic if untreated.

03

Soft Tissue Therapy

Instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM), manual myofascial release, and targeted trigger point work address the muscle injury directly. This reduces spasm, breaks down early scar tissue adhesions, and improves local circulation to accelerate healing. These are the tissues doing the most work post-injury and they respond well to hands-on care.

04

Therapeutic Modalities

Depending on your presentation, we may incorporate additional protocols to manage inflammation, reduce pain, and accelerate tissue healing during the acute phase. These are integrated into a cohesive treatment session — not standalone treatments.

05

Rehabilitative Exercise & Home Care

As your acute symptoms improve, we introduce progressive cervical strengthening and stabilization exercises to restore neuromuscular control and prevent re-injury. We also provide specific home care protocols for pain management between visits, and education on positions and activities to avoid during recovery.

06

Progress Documentation & Coordination

We provide thorough clinical notes, functional outcome measures, and progress documentation throughout your care. If you're working with an attorney, we coordinate seamlessly with your legal team. We can also refer to specialist imaging (MRI) or other providers when clinically indicated.

Frequently Asked Questions About Whiplash Care

How soon after an accident should I be seen?

As soon as possible — ideally within 24 to 72 hours of the accident. This is when inflammation is peaking and early intervention has the greatest impact on recovery trajectory. It also establishes the medical record closest in time to the accident, which is important for insurance and legal purposes. That said, it's never too late to be evaluated. Even chronic post-accident pain responds well to chiropractic care.

I feel okay, do I still need to come in?

Yes, we strongly recommend it. Whiplash frequently has a delayed onset due to adrenaline suppressing pain perception. Many patients feel fine the day of the accident and wake up the next morning in significant pain. An evaluation also creates the documentation record for your insurance claim. If something does develop later, having a clinical record from shortly after the accident is extremely valuable.

Will my auto insurance cover chiropractic care?

In most cases, yes. Colorado requires that auto policies offer MedPay coverage, which pays for medical treatment regardless of fault. If you have MedPay on your policy, your chiropractic care is typically covered up to your policy limit — with no co-pays or deductibles. We verify your MedPay benefits at your first visit and bill directly. If you don't have MedPay, we also accept most major health insurance plans.

Do I need an attorney to recieve care?

No. You can begin chiropractic care immediately, independent of any legal process. However, if you are working with or plan to work with a personal injury attorney, our thorough clinical documentation will support your case. We coordinate regularly with PI attorneys and can provide records, narratives, and outcome data for your legal team. We have a collaborative relationship with several local attorneys and can provide a referral if needed.

How many visits will I need?

It depends on the severity of your injury. Mild whiplash may resolve with 8–12 visits over 4–6 weeks. More significant injuries with disc involvement or neurological symptoms may require a longer course of care. We develop a care plan based on your examination findings and reassess your progress regularly. You'll always know where you are in your recovery and what the next phase looks like.

Can chiropractic make whiplash worse?

When performed by a licensed chiropractor after a proper evaluation, chiropractic care is very safe for whiplash injuries. We tailor technique to the acuity and severity of each patient — for example, using gentle mobilization rather than high-velocity manipulation during the acute inflammatory phase. We also perform orthopedic and neurological screening to identify any contraindications before beginning treatment. If imaging or referral is indicated, we'll tell you.
