How Run Clubs Are Changing Westminster's Wellness Scene (And How to Keep Your Body Up for It)

🏃 Just crossed the finish line at the 2026 Colfax Half Marathon. 13.1 miles through Denver's most iconic streets and your chiropractor's spine is still intact.
A few weeks ago, I ran the Colfax Half Marathon with 25,000 of my closest strangers. We wound through City Park, past the Capitol, through the Denver Zoo (yes, with actual animals watching), and straight through Denver Fire Station #1, which is exactly as chaotic and fun as it sounds. I crossed the finish line feeling solid, grateful, and already thinking about my patients who have been asking me about getting into running.
Here's what I noticed though: I wasn't alone on that course. It seemed like half of Denver showed up, including a ton of people from local run clubs. And that tracks with what we're seeing everywhere right now. Run clubs are having a serious moment, and the Westminster and north Denver communities are very much part of it.
"Run clubs aren't just about fitness anymore. They're about connection. And honestly, that's good for your health in more ways than one."
Why run clubs are exploding right now
People are moving away from solo gym sessions and toward community-driven wellness. Run clubs check a lot of boxes at once: free (or cheap) to join, flexible, social, and you get your miles in. Whether it's a 5am sunrise group along the Farmers' High Line Canal or a Saturday morning loop around Standley Lake, there's something for everyone in our area.
The vibe has shifted too. It's less about race training and more about this being how we hang out on a Tuesday. That's a beautiful thing, until your IT band decides it has opinions.
The part nobody talks about at the meetup
Here's the thing I see a lot in practice: people jump into a run club, love it, go from zero miles to twenty miles a week in a month, and then land in my office with knee pain, hip flexor tightness, or low back issues that seemingly came out of nowhere.
It didn't come out of nowhere. Running is repetitive loading. Every stride, your spine and pelvis absorb impact. When your joints are moving well and your hips are balanced, your body handles that beautifully. When they're not, things start to compensate. And compensations eventually complain.
Most common running complaint: Low back + hip tightness - Usually from pelvic imbalance
Second most common: IT band + knee issues - Often a hip mobility problem
Best prevention strategy: Stay ahead of it - Don't wait for pain to show up
What chiropractic actually does for runners
I trained for Colfax for months, and regular adjustments were part of my routine. Not because I was injured, but because I wanted to stay out of injury. There's a big difference. When your spine and pelvis are aligned, your gait is more efficient, your hips move through a full range of motion, and your body isn't compensating in ways that lead to overuse injuries down the road.
For runners specifically, we look at things like sacroiliac joint function, lumbar mobility, and how your hips are tracking through your stride. A lot of runners are also dealing with tight hip flexors from sitting at a desk all day, and then asking those same muscles to perform for 10 or more miles on a Saturday. That's a recipe for something giving out eventually.
The goal is to keep you running, consistently, comfortably, and for a long time.
"You don't have to be in pain to benefit from chiropractic care. The best time to get adjusted is before your body starts asking loudly."
Whether you're running Colfax or just starting out
If you're part of a local run club, or thinking about joining one, this is a great time to get a movement assessment and make sure your foundation is solid. It doesn't matter if you're training for a half marathon or just doing 2 miles on Thursdays with friends. Your body deserves to keep doing the things you love doing with it.
And if you ran Colfax this year, shout out. You earned it. Come see me and we'll make sure your body recovers well and you're ready for whatever's next on the race calendar.
